Discussion:
Installing in the language I use

Sirs,
I would like to try your product. I installed the Windows version. Your
system is so clever that it could see that my computer had a Czech
version of Windows installed, and installed the Czech language version
of the program, even though I selected English for the installer language.
This would be great, if I were Czech.
Unfortunately, I am not. I am a foreigner working here. I'm sure you've
heard of this phenomenon, where people from one country work in another.
So, do I need to set up a proxy IP in order to get an English version?
Swallow the loss of productivity in trying to figure out your GUI in a
second language (I do speak some Czech but I don't know what all the
words in your GUI mean.)? How do I get the program installed in English?

you can change the language in the preferences, it needs a restart after
you change it b.t.w.

have you tried that?

I have to guess this a bit, since I am on Linux, but I assume this works the same on Windows:

open the file <your homedir>/.bluefish/rcfile-2.0
find the line that says "language:" (Without the quotes)
Change the option to whatever country code you like: language: en_EN

Well here it goes:

Click 2nd menu from the left (Edit / Upravit)
Click last entry at the bottom (Preferences / Preferencí)

In the dialog that opens up:
Click 5th entry in the list (User interface / UŸivatelské rozhraní)

On the right side of the dialog:
Click the first combobox. That one contains the languages.
If all the languages are translated into Czech as well, look for "Angliètina"

The translations I put in this mail are from Google translations, so they can be way off. Don't blame me for that :)

Cheers,

WJ

Well, I've done all of this, and unfortunately none of it works. Setting
the UI display language to English does not change the display language.
And I cannot apply manual changes to rcfile-2. I've tried. I change
language from C to en_EN and start the program, and have a Czech
display. I look into the preferences again and double-check that English
is selected and apply the changes. This changes the language in rcfile-2
back to C.
It seems that I will have to wait until I am visiting an English
speaking country and can download an English version of the product
before I will be able to use it. Or possibly switch to Linux if I can
change languages on that version. :(

try the brute force trick: remove all translation data from the Bluefish
directories. Look for *.mo files (I hope they have the same extension on
windows) and delete them.

Hey Jeff,

I assume all the languages are available in the installation, so there is no notions of an English download or a Czech download.

I know GIMP has this issue too, but that is sort of GTK for Windows fault. You can change that by setting a system environment variable called "LANG" and set that to "en".

To see how to add/change an environment variable check this document: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310519. Remember to keep pressing OK when you're finished. (I believe it takes 3 dialogs in order to get there, so close all dialogs with the OK button). Remember to reboot after that.

Good luck again :)

you can change the language in the preferences, it needs a restart after
you change it b.t.w.
Changing language to whatever doesn't work here (Lenny, Bluefish 2.0.1
rev5926M). There are no language codes NL, DE, and ES. To change it to
german I have to use de_DE manually.

I'm sorry I haven't tried with a newer version yet. Maybe this is
already fixed there.

It is already fixed and all supported languages are available in this

(from debian.wgdd.de). Please be patient.

As most of you know, it is possible to change the GUI language of
Bluefish via preferences. Unfortunately we received several reports of
Windows users, that this doesn't work for them (see bugzilla #633252,
#629294 or this thread).

So I began to search and test and found these threads [1,2]. The way we
use to initialize the GUI in the language chosen by the user works
perfectly under Linux, but it doesn't work on Windows. The setlocale()
call has no effect. Using putenv() at the beginning of the thread indeed
works. I wrote a very simply application to test things - just a
g_print() call with calling gettext and two translations French and
German of the string. But surprisingly on my Windows system it only
worked for German and English, but not for e.g. French. The other issue
I see with the putenv() solution is that we need to call this function
at the very beginning. But to get the language we need to parse the
configuration file, which is usually done after the first setup.

(JFTR: Windows also doesn't use the 4 character codes for languages.
Windows accepts setlocale("German") but not setlocale("de_DE").)

Another independent issue: We call setlocale() *after* gtk_init() (this
one is called via gtk_get_option_group()), which is highly discouraged
by the Gtk+ reference.

As a workaround you might change the Standards and Format setting at
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options.
Another solution might be to create and set the LANG environment
variable. (both are untested by myself!)

So please send your comments or offer your help to get things running on
Windows too.

Thx and regards, Daniel

Thanks to Werner and Daniel! Setting the LANG env variable works.

I would like to try your product. I installed the Windows version. Your
system is so clever that it could see that my computer had a Czech
version of Windows installed, and installed the Czech language version
of the program, even though I selected English for the installer language.
This would be great, if I were Czech.
